In the middle of the 12th century, the Widen Church was constructed in the old town of Weida. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the following century it has been converted into a Romanesque church with two steeples. Later a Gothic annex was built. During the Thirty Years’ War, the nave has been destroyed and, since then, is preserved as a ruin. The two steeples of the Widen Church are also visible in the city coat of arms.
St. Veit Parish Church
Kirchplatz/OT Veitsberg
07570 Wünschendorf
Having been built more than 1000 years ago, the St. Veit Parish Church belongs to the oldest churches in Thuringia. The oldest part is called "Ottonische Kapelle". It developed from a castle’s chapel which is said to be built in 947. Due to the fact that, until the 17th century, the church has steadily been redesigned and extended, many different architectural styles can be found. Very worth-seeing is the Late Gothic Mary Altar (about 1490), two stained glass windows that belong to the oldest in Germany (about 1150), the dedicative inscription (about 1165) as well as the medieval stone relief with a picture of St. Veit.
