Agriculture plays an important role in our region. Approximately 46,200 hectare with mostly good or very good soil are used for agricultural purposes. Sound structures in terms of company size make this industrial sector a stable partner of the food industry, a Thuringian industry characterized by growth.

In addition to mixed farming, agriculture nowadays offers a lot more than it is known for. Agricultural businesses operate facilities for the production of energy, produce renewable primary products for their own needs as well as many industrial partners. By directly selling their products to the consumers, they provide freshness and quality. In addition to agriculture, forestry is another important main pillar of the region. The administrative district comprises about 25% forest area. The predominant lumbers are spruce and beech with a share of 30% each.
